" Claudia Rose Zanocco:
17 years old, of Worcester Massachusetts; formally of South Holland, Illinois. Passed away peacefully on Monday, April 25, 2011. She leaves behind, her mother, Nikelle Zanocco and her daddy, Al Brooks of Worcester, Massachusetts. Three Brothers Zachary, Blue and Bisket Brooks and a sister Holly McKay, all from Worcester Ma. Claudia also leaves a Grandmaw-maw Pam and Papa Ray both from Batavia, Illinois. Uncle Justin Graca of Steger, Illinois and Auntie Cristin and Uncle Gavin Zanocco of Batavia, Illinois. Grandfather, Fred Graca and Grandma Mary of Florida. Claudia's feline brothers, Compleanno and Fido, and feline sister, Momma, were predeceased 2008 and 2009.
Claudia was born approximately 1995 and lived two years before finding herself an orphan at the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights, Illinois. It was love at first sight when her Grandmaw-maw took little Claudia from her cage and placed her into Nikelle's arms. That afternoon on April 20th,1997 was the beginning of their 14 year journey together.
Claudia grew up under the loving care of her mother, Nikelle. They were inseparable. Claudia had a love for life and enjoyed walks and road trips. Claudia wanted for nothing. She was well nourished with unconditional love and support from mommy and daddy and everyone who knew her. Claudia loved when her daddy cooked cause she knew she was in for a treat. Claudia was known for her dancing skills, and for a treat she would show you a perfect pirouette. Claudia loved to play with anyone willing to enjoy her company. She especially enjoyed fun time with her brother Zachary who loved her as if she was a real person. Claudia was very protective of those she loved, especially her Mommy and her Nonna, who lived next door to her on Elm Street. If Claudia was on Nonna's lap you knew to come back later. Claudia favorites were: cookies, bye-bye in the car and pup-peroni treats plus many more. Claudia was known best for her bark. She had it and knew how to use it. Claudia will never be forgotten. May god rest her beautiful soul. Rest in peace our special girl.

Biography
This is my story about my Baby Girl, Claudia Rose
I have way too many memories to put into one snapshot. My time with Claudia was the best 14 years of my life. I can't even remember what life was before her and it is going to take time to adjust to life without her. I know she will always be with me in spirit, but for now I miss her so much and it hurts like crazy. The memories I have of Claudia I will always cherish and hold close in my heart. I will never let them fade. Words really cannot express the life we have shared together. I will close my eyes and picture her little face when you would say things like "do you want to go bye-bye in the car? or do you want a cookie?" The way she would perk up her ears and tilt her head. The look was priceless. Or the way you could get her running in the yard.. she was as fast as a jack rabbit. The sound of her bark, it could have been defined as annoying.. but now it is sweet music to my ears. The feel and smell of her fur after a perfect grooming from Lisa.. or the feel, look and smell when a trip to beauty shop was overdue. That is when "Gloria the Hobo Dog" showed up. The sound of her prancing behind you... the way she would push open the bathroom door and just curl up in a pile of clothes... or the sock basket.
How she was always waiting at the door when I got home.. doing her happy dance to see me. The special quiet moments together, the lazy weekend days snoozing on the couch together watching TV all day. At bedtime, having her start the night at the foot of the bed... waking up to do pee-pee at least once in the night and ending up with her head on my pillow by morning and her face so close to daddy�s face.. sneaking in a kiss or two...
How she would hide cookies and treats in and around the house, like couch cushions, under the bedding or just buried anywhere she could find it later. The way she would take a mouth full of food... walk out of the kitchen, drop the food and then eat it slowly anywhere but at her bowl. She loved anything fried, salty, cheesy and over all anything bad for you, much like her mommy. She loved to hear the doorbell ring and knew the Chinese food was being delivered..She loved chicken and veggies... in the summertime she loved hotdogs on the grill and always looked forward to cookouts in the yard.
Claudia never needed to be on a leash, she never ran away and was always right with me. She was so smart. She had expressive humanlike eyes that were filled with emotion and expresion. It was like she always knew what you were saying based on her expressions.
She always adjusted well to moves...from IL to Ma.. and at least 5 moves... but even though she didn�t care what house or what town we were in, she didn't like to be alone. I would get reports from neighbors that she would howl and cry during the day when I was gone. Hence never being able to rent an apartment...so many houses were bought and sold for the poodle. �
She loved to be in the car, but always wanted to drive with me. We are lucky she was a good driver..
She could do high fives, but for tricks.. She really thought she was above all those typical dog tricks.. She knew them, but for things like sit and stay... she felt were too dog like for such a princess. But she would do a perfect twirl for a treat.
She was always ready for the camera. When she went for her professional photo shoot, let's just say, it wasn�t difficult to get the shots.
Claudia was the best Monday work companion.. Every Monday she would sit by my side. And as the scheduled 3:00 conference call started and roll call happened Claudia would make her presence known to all..
Claudia was a fashionista, she had pretty sweaters, pink with a fur color, pink with stripes, navy with a neon strip, a Coach collar, a beautiful white dress and many more� she even had designer diapers when the time came...plaid or poka-dots were prefered.
Claudia was always sweet as could be, but if anyone showed any aggression or �pretend� hitting, Claudia would attack and defend like a pit bull. She was most protective of Nonna and me. When Zachary became her brother.. it took a little while longer, but eventually she protected him just the same.
She would also get pretty angry if anyone tried to take her cookie or treat away from her� it really pissed her off! She thought she was tough.. she would remind everyone that she was from the south side of Chicago� she always charged any big dog walking by or even one time she chased a horse while apple picking.. Moving to Worcester, she fit right in.
In Oct of 09 we adopted Blue from the shelter. They spent a lot of time together. Even though she didn�t show much love for him, I know she did love him and he loved her. I am grateful that Blue had a year and a half to spend with Claudia, picking up some of her idiosyncrasies � I will see her through him..
Claudia loved to travel. She went on a big airplane to AZ and visited The Grand Canyon. On the walking trail the princess just got a little too tired of walking and insisted she was carried the rest of the way. While in AZ, she couldn�t figure out why there was no grass to do pee-pee on�
She loved trips to New Hampshire.. she thought she was tough enough to fight the bears..
She couldn�t wait for the long road trips to and from Chicago. Seeing her Grandma and Nonno and family was the best.. even though she and Pierre fought for the top spot! One trip back she saw Niagara Falls. Claudia was always apart of weekend or day trips and NEVER stayed with someone she didn�t love and never in a kennel.
She always looked forward to seeing her favorite stylist, Lisa. Lisa selected Claudia to be one of the few special dogs to be groomed in her home. Even after moving to Worcester we made the trip to Franklin Ma. just to see her. She always made Claudia beautiful, coming home with a new scarf or bows.
When Claudia was young she liked to play with toys.. but as she matured, toys were not her thing� her favorites when she was young were �Snake, Chicken baby, Porge and Baloo.
Our Journey started 14 years ago at a shelter in Chicago Heights. Looking for a cat� I found a sad little poodle� one that reminded me of Katie Sue, Grandma Rohe�s poodle. There was no doubt that she was going to mine! Instantly Claudia and I were inseparable. Where I was, Claudia was nearby.. We have shared so many moments, so many life experiences and I wouldn�t trade a second of it. The sorrow I feel is that she won�t be here to share the future moments. The one constant in my life is no longer here in the physical, but no one can take away what we had� no one can erase the all the special memories I have. In time I know the hole in my heart will get smaller and the pain will start to ease.. but for now I will cherish every experience and every memory of her. I love my Baby Girl!
The diagnoses and final days
At the end of May 2010, Claudia began doing a gagging cough. At first I just thought it was old age, but then when she passed out while coughing I knew it was much more serious. I took her to Ashland Animal Hospital and she saw Dr. Wolf. After running several tests, including a doggie cardiologist seeing her, she was diagnosed with airway disease and congested heart failure (same as Nonna). Even though she had lived with a slight murmur her entire life, it was never serious or a cause for concern. But now it had really started to take its toll and doctors predicted she would only have a few months left.. The airway disease was basically her trachea was weakening and could collapse. So it was really important to not have her coughing, or get too excited, as her airway could close up� and back in October 2010 it did� I had returned home from a few days of a business trip in upstate NY.. I arrived home late 10:00pmish� I parked the car in the driveway and Al let Claudia out the front door to greet me. She got so excited to see me that she collapsed� she stopped breathing. As I fell to the ground screaming, Al came running out and scooped her up and brought her limp body into the house. He laid her on the kitchen floor and began blowing air down her nose and mouth. After about 3 blows and what felt like forever� Claudia took a deep breath and came back to us. I couldn�t believe what was happening.. I just thought.. .no.. not now.. not like this� If it wasn�t for Al, I would not have had the additional 6 months with her that I was blessed to have had. Al is my hero and I will forever be grateful to him for saving the Poodle. Since her diagnoses the medications she took really seemed to help her. Every time we went to the vet, Dr. Wolf always seemed happy and surprised to see how well she was doing. Claudia really did well and even though we had new and more specific ways to care for her, things were pretty normal. Except the meds she was on made her do LOTs of pee-pee.. even more than normal�
She started to eat less dog food and only want people food.. at that point I gave her whatever she wanted�
On April 20, Claudia and I celebrated 14 years together. I made an appointment for her to be groomed by Lisa. Her and I made the trip to Franklin alone and I enjoyed the ride with her. After an hour of getting pretty we drove home� she was perfect.
Buy the next day, Holy Thursday, I worked from home and noticed she was breathing a little harder and heavier. I called the vet and brought her in at 4:00. Dr Wolf confirmed the fluid in the lungs were significant. She suggested an increase of one of the meds, Lasix and we could monitor her until Saturday. Now at this point Claudia had not eaten anything since wed, but continued to drink water. After the new meds, she made very little improvement, just a little ease on breathing� by Saturday morning we went back to Dr. Wolf� she was only 7 pounds and the doctor suggested another med and to just take it all one day at a time. Unfortunately by Saturday night she started having diarrhea and still had not eaten anything but 3 small slices of Carl Budding turkey. Now it is Easter Sunday and we are preparing to have a house full of people including an executive from work that I invited. All I really wanted was to just be with Claudia.. but the show must go on. I made a cozy bed in my office for her and just made frequent checks on her. By Sunday night when everyone had left I just held her bundled up in my arms for the rest of the night. She had a tough night sleep and by now she was refusing water. I cherished my time with her through the night. Now there was no eating, drinking or going to the bathroom. On Monday morning, I was schedule to work from home, as usual. I thought.. I will would work from the couch, keep her snuggled next to me and see how the day went. But it was soon clear that time was running out. Her breathing increased in intensity and she just looked so tired. She was unable to walk or hold herself up and she was starting to release a foul smell.. Even though I had always told Claudia that I would never make the decision to put her down and instead let her go at home, it was becoming clear to me that I was now faced with the hardest decision of my life. How do I take this precious baby and end her life? How would I bare this burden? And once again, Al, my hero showed me the light. He said one thing to me that really hit me� He compared how his grandmother and my grandmother had the privilege and honor of dying in peace with the assistance of medication to help ease the pain and utter suffering. Claudia was experiencing this without that luxury. When he made this profound point, I realized what had to be done�I just hoped it was what she wanted and that she knew I was doing it with all the love in my heart. With that, Al made the dreaded phone call to Dr. Wolf.
She told us to come in at 1:30. We left the house at about noon and took the drive very slowly, arriving at about 1:00. It was a gloomy day and there was on and off rain sprinkles. I held Claudia outside on a bench wrapped in her soft poka-dotted blanket. We shared the last half hour together as I told her stories, told her how much I loved her and asked her to tell me it was ok� at one point she looked up at me and I knew in her eyes it was what she wanted and needed�
I told her to go find Nonna, Grandma Rohe, Figgy, Fido, Comp and Mamma�. And most importantly I asked her to send me a sign that she was there� happy and with everyone.
At about 1:20 we went into the vet and waited in the room for Dr. Wolf. When she came in I again couldn�t believe that this time had come.. one I tried to prepare myself for over the past year.. but one that I never wanted to face. Dr. Wolf kindly and compassionately explained everything that was going to happen� and assured me that I was doing the right thing. Al and I both said our final goodbyes. I held her in my arms as Claudia seemed so peaceful and ready. I had the privilege to have felt Claudia�s final heart beat in my hand. It happened so fast and in the end I know it was the right thing to do for HER. Al and I were able to spend a few more minutes with her. We wrapped her in one of my favorite pajama tops and I took her blanket and her sweater.
As I was about to ask Dr Wolf if I could cut a pieces of her fur, she was already handing me a baggie with a small piece� Dr. Wolf was absolutely amazing through this entire process and I am grateful that she was Claudia�s doctor. .
Al and I left Ashland with heavy hearts. There was an emptiness that I felt�like I was missing a part of me. Claudia didn�t waste any time showing me signs� with the help of Nonna and Grandma Rohe�..
Again, Al stepped up to be my rock� we decided to get some kind of tree or bush to plant in honor of Claudia� I wanted something that would bloom beautiful flowers this time every year� I noticed the Magnolia trees were coming into bloom and that seemed very appropriate.. we first stopped at the Weston nursery in Hopkinton, (the town Claudia and I lived in when we came to Ma) Weston Nursery is one of the largest in MA. To my surprise we found nothing there that seemed right�
Al suggested we go to the little nursery in Worcester that we have gone to before. As we made the drive back to Worcester I felt numb. We pulled into the parking lot of the Worcester nursery and as if someone new to have a magnolia tree ready and waiting for us� it was the very first row of trees. They were potted and a perfect size. After choosing the magnolia, I looked at the row of plants next to it. It was the most unusual plant I have ever seen� it had little bell flowers, that looked just like lily of the valley.. but everyone knows lily of the valley doesn�t grow on a bush� so what is it? I read the tag and to my amazement it was a blueberry bush�. Anyone that knows Al and I knows we have a thing for blueberries� and anyone that knows me and my relationship with my Grandma Rohe knows that lily of the valley was her favorite flower and has been a very significant symbol for me over the last 12 years since her passing. So could it be a bush that combines blueberries and lily of the valley� yes.. it was� this was my first significant sign from Claudia and Grandma Rohe that she was ok�
The nursery has an inside gift shop� I went in just to have a look� I found 3 items in the gift shop that I currently own in my house� I feel like again Claudia was telling me �I am Home� we purchased both the Magnolia and the Blueberry bush and headed home. As I cried on the couch, Al was outside in the rain digging a hole for the blueberry bush�.
The next day, I planned to take the day off� but as Al left for work, Zach was at school and it was just me and Blue in the house.. it seemed so empty and quite.. so I decided to just get dressed and go to work.. but what store should I go to? I texted my best friend Holly and said, If I go to Wrentham today do you want to meet for lunch� she excepted the invite but told me she had her daughter Zoey with her� I said of course bring Zoey, I would love to see my Goddaughter� I cried most of the drive to Wrentham, as it is the same way to Ashland and Frankin� when I arrived in the mall parking lot, I pulled into one of many available spots. As I looked to my left, there was a man and a woman in the car next to me� the man was holding an apricot mini poodle. She looked so much like young Claudia that I began to cry� their window was down so I asked them if I could pet their dog and explained about losing Claudia the day before..They kindly allowed me to. She came right to the window and kissed my face.. I held her not wanting to let go� as I looked in her face, I noticed her pretty pink collar and name tag� her name was Zoey! I was shocked� I mean what are the chances of pulling up to a car with a poodle just like Claudia and that her name is Zoey�. My guess.. not a coincidence.. Claudia wanted me to know that she was with me always and could see me.. and knew I was seeing Zoey in a few hours� she also wanted me to remember her young and healthy.. because that is how she is in heaven!
Later that day, about 4:00 I needed to get some fresh air, it was a beautiful sunny 70-degree day� As I walked around the outdoor mall I wondered into a jewelry store, one I had never been in.. And I know ALL the jewelry stores.. The first case was all blue diamond rings� just for retail therapy I had the sales woman show them to me� sparkly things usually make me happy! In basic conversation with the sales woman she tells me that she has sent me a resume before.. I didn�t recall it so I asked her to send it again. I wrote down my full name and email address. She noticed my Italian last name and asked if I was Italian. I replied yes, I see your nametag says Lina� you must be Italian too. She said yes, but Lina is short for Nicolina� At that moment I think I just went numb�. I asked her to repeat her name, Nicolina� she said it was her grandmother�s name too. Now, anyone that knows my Zanocco side of the family knows that that is what Nonna and auntie Kiki called me� finally a sign from My Nonna. One I have waited 10 years for. Again this was just another sign that comforts me in knowing Nonna was there for Claudia and they are together�. As a side note.. I have never met anyone named Nicolina. And just a few days ago, my sister Cristin found out a friend of hers real name is Nicolina.. That one is for the family! It�s about time Nonna reached out!
Back at the jewelry store� Lina than says she wanted to show me a blue diamond ring on sale� as she is showing me the ring, all I could think is the pave setting reminds me of a blueberry.. and for the price I knew Claudia wanted me to have it! That was a very fashionista sign.. J While I was at the Jewelry store I really wanted to get something for Al. He always says I never get him any jewelry� so I found him a �man-gagement� ring� it has 6 little screw like details for the 6 years we have known each other� that was really a ring for daddy from Claudia� he truly deserved a special gifts.
When Claudia passed we made the decision to have her remains done at Angel view crematorium. We were told she would be picked up �sometime this week� from Ashland. As the first couple of days had passed it was now Thursday morning. I was getting ready for work and blow-drying my hair at about 9:00am. All of a sudden I got the most overwhelming feeling that I needed something more of Claudia.. like more of her fur or her paw prints� I asked myself why didn�t I think of these additions sooner�. So I thought.. as soon as I get into the car to leave I will call Angleview to see if I could still get these things�
I called at 9:13am, asked for MaryAnn, but she was on another call. When she called me back, I asked for these 2 things. She told me she did not know what the status was, but she would call me back. At about 11am she called to tell me it was too late. Although disappointed I was ok with it�
At about noon I got another call from Angleview. It was completely separate from my original call.. it was the official call of the completion confirmation. The woman on the phone said� "I was calling to let you know that Claudia�s cremation was completed this morning at 8:55am� Again the coincidence of me having this need to have her at 9:00am� and during that exact time her shell was being preserved into ashes� I think the significance of this sign was Claudia telling me� you don�t need the tangible things� I am in your heart, your memory and my spirit is with you.. it is time to move forward and know that her old body is not who she is in heaven!
My final significant sign� while looking for as many picture as I could find of her, I remembered I had 4 discs of pictures from my old laptop. I have not looked at these pictures in over 3 years� while looking through them I was surprised to not find any of her. By disc 3, Al and I scrolled through and found the only pictures of her in all 4 discs.. These pictures were from Easter 07. She is beautifully posed in front of her new brother�s Easter basket. Claudia died the day after Easter 2011. She is with Jesus and I am so happy she is in the most perfect place. I can�t wait to see her again.. I know she will be there waiting for me. Goodbye for now.. My Baby Girl! I love you so!
