Biography
TENER, Jean Frances, 85, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away May 5th, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer. Jean is survived by her devoted husband Robert, son Colin (Ann Gronow) of Toronto, daughter Janice (James) Sanford of Calgary, and grand-daughter Taylor Sanford of Calgary, and her brother Ron Baker of Burnaby. She also leaves her cherished best friend, Apollonia Steele of Stratford, and much loved sisters and brothers-in-law and many special nieces and nephews.
Jean was born April 27, 1931 in London, England to Ethel and James Baker. She was raised from the age of four, however, by her aunt and uncle, Emma and Bay Jacot, because her mother was dying of tuberculosis. Her mother finally died when Jean was eight. As a child she lived through the London Blitz of World War II. She was eventually evacuated to Somerset on the coast and lived with the Meader family and experienced a house filled with children for four years. At 16 she graduated from Pittman's Secretarial College in London, supported financially by her brother, Ron, and father. Jean emigrated to Canada at 21 as a babysitter for her brother's children in Vancouver but eventually went to work for William Mercer. She intended only a brief 6-month stay, but it was during this time that she met and fell in love with Robert Tener, a University of British Columbia Literature student. Her brother felt his friend, a "nice, domesticated Canadian," would be good for her. Jean and Robert began a happy marriage on May 21, 1955. After this she continued with university studies at the University of British Columbia. In 1962 the Tener's moved to Calgary, Alberta for Robert to accept a full time teaching position in the English Department at the University of Calgary. Jean went on to graduate with a BA and an MA in History from the University of Calgary.
Jean joined the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections of the University of Calgary Library in 1973, where she became involved in the growing archival collections, particularly the literary ones. She attended the Public Archives of Canada course held in conjunction with the University of Ottawa in the fall and spring of 1976-1977, followed by a course in Advanced Archival Arrangement and Description from the University of Washington in 1979. In 1984 she was appointed as the first University Archivist at the University of Calgary, a position she held until her retirement in 1991. She became an honorary member of the Association of Canadian Archivists in 1992.
During her career she served in various professional associations, including the Directors of Alberta's Archives, the Alberta Archives Council (1988-1990) and at the executive level with the Alberta Society of Archivists (1986-1988), the Association of Canadian Archivists (1979-1981), and the Canadian Council of Archives.
Jean and Robert celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2015. Jean's family and many friends always enjoyed her kindness, great intelligence and acerbic wit.
